Google now supports the open OAuth standard for sharing data through its Google Data interface, a move that could make it easier to tap into information stored at Google property.

Google headquarters in Mountain View, Calif.
(Credit: Stephen Shankland/CNET News.com)

The Google Data API (application programming interface)--GData for short--provides a conduit whereby other Web sites can slurp out data stored at Google. For personal information, such as photos at Picasa or contacts at Gmail, access to that information requires authentication. OAuth provides a standard way to perform that authentication, which means programmers at least theoretically should have an easier time writing code.

Google announced the OAuth support Thursday on its Data API blog.

Also Thursday, Google announced that Google Finance is now supported in the Google Data API. That means data could be retrieved to build, for example, a gadget with a live chart showing changing portfolio value.

And since the API permits two-way communications, it also means an outside service could update a user's information at Google Finance, for example with recent stock trades.

Google users are starting to see an updated interface to the iGoogle home page, according to the Google Operating System blog.

iGoogle lets users select various modules such as mail, photos, games, or a to-do list; it competes chiefly with My Yahoo but also with sites from rivals including Netvibes and PageFlakes.

As expected, the revamped iGoogle provides a navigation bar on the left edge of the screen that lets users select iGoogle gadgets and perform other functions. Another feature could mean more dramatic changes to the site, though: a "canvas view" that lets gadgets fill up the whole page also will permit ads on iGoogle.

The change is on schedule: Google said it would start switching users to the new iGoogle look this month. In a blog entry this week, Google said canvas view would be available to more users in July.

Google also is working on changes that will accommodate gadgets that run on the OpenSocial foundation, which at least theoretically will enable them to run not just on iGoogle but on other OpenSocial sites, too.

Movable Type users looking to get simple video comments on their blogs have access to a new plug-in today from the folks at Seesmic. Once installed commenters can add both text and/or video underneath someone's blog post, similar to what's been available for WordPress users since late April. The plug-in joins similar ones for Disqus, DotClear, and Cocomment. One for Drupal is also right around the corner.

Personally I've never been a big fan of video comments on blog posts solely for attention's sake. I just can't tell if a comment is worth viewing from the thumbnail, whereas I can eyeball text far faster. That hasn't stopped some of our competitors like Mashable and TechCrunch from adding video commenting to their sites though.

What do you think?

Diggers like Barack.
(Credit: CNET Networks)

Today Digg pushed out an update to its popular candidates section, the part of Digg that tracks all things politics.

While mostly a house cleaning move to get rid of campaign drop-outs, there's some fun data to play with using the four other listed candidates alongside John McCain and Barack Obama. One of them being Ralph Nader's unpopularity with the Digg community.

The section is a sort of catch-all for stories related to each candidate. It also displays friend counts of each candidate and people who have effectively "dugg" them. Of those numbers Obama currently has the lead with nearly 20,000 people following him. John McCain comes in at a mere 2,019. Nadar on the other hand clocks in at just 10, which goes in tandem with a story dugg for his running announcement that received nearly unanimous votes of disapproval from commenters.

While the befriending feature on Digg is not a clear indication of either candidate's ties with the community it's a sign of how much they're focusing on their social networking campaigns. Other social news services like Twitter have gotten interest from the candidates, but none of them have the supercharged community Digg does, albeit its echo chamber that leans towards less publicly popular candidates like Ron Paul.

Also introduced today is dedicated section to Olympics news which is currently devoid of any stories.

Viigo's flagship RSS reader is now only one data destination of many.
(Credit: Viigo)

Another Yahoo department has cause for concern. Up until last week, Yahoo Go was top dog in the mobile widget arena, pulling everything from weather, news, and finance to local listings, Flickr photos, and search onto Yahoo Go 3.0 beta, the company's rich application for smartphones. But Viigo 3.0 beta has added many of the same elements to what is essentially a faster-loading and more visually straightforward wrapper.

I've sung Viigo's praises when it was flexing new-found muscle as a superb RSS reader for Windows Mobile and BlackBerry devices. The new beta, released June 19, still retains its RSS-fetching core, but news is now one tab of nine. Like Yahoo Go, Viigo 3.0 beta will report on sports scores, weather, entertainment, stocks, travel, and local listings.

The resemblance to Yahoo Go's more famous 3.0 beta has not been lost on Viigo CEO Mark Ruddock, who stated in an interview with CNET Download.com that the similarities between the two content programs are more coincidental duplication than deliberate emulation.

"[Viigo's] services reflect the services we believe will initially be the most interesting," Ruddock said. While it's true that Viigo will necessarily have to mirror much of Yahoo's content in order to make it as the "everything" source for mobile data, Viigo's engineers will have to work hard to introduce features that surpass its greatest rivals. "It's the way we will compete with anyone in this space," he added.

Viigo's weather-reading channel, in cahoots with Accuweather.
(Credit: Viigo)

More to come
Here's Viigo's vision. First, there's filling in the features laid out in this first beta build, many of which are mere placeholders marked by screenshots of sneak previews. Next come back-end changes that will mash up content for richly integrated data on a results screen. And as always, there's gaining new partnerships with content providers, among them a major music label with whom Viigo would like to offer band and concert information and audio tracks and podcasts. Opening up an XML-based development platform in Q1 is expected to also populate Viigo with content and new functionality.

Until then, Viigo 3.0 beta is in good shape for forging ahead and quite possibly for besting Yahoo Go. The product isn't yet where it ought to be, admits CEO Ruddock. The old RSS mainstay cries out for a visual overhaul to match the new look; the full feature set has yet to be completed; and the home screen demands customization--just ask users wondering why Canadian football deserves to be the third-most valued channel on their reader. That slot obviously belongs to the SPL.

A blog post from Facebook product manager Naomi Gleit early on Friday announced an update to the site that initially may seem extremely minor: after years of using the grammatically abhorrent reflexive pronoun "themself" to describe actions in members' activity feeds (i.e. "Dwight Schrute tagged themself in the album 'Booze Cruise '08'"), the social network will be using the proper "himself" and "herself" instead.

My initial reaction to the announcement: big deal. Sounds like someone high up at Facebook was guilt-tripped into making the change by a finicky former English teacher.

But in choosing to put out a press release for something so seemingly minor, Facebook's team clearly understands that this is a change to the site that could prove sensitive for some. Members who haven't already will now be asked to specify a gender, for the purpose of refining the wording in News Feed and Mini-Feed stories.

The reason behind the change, besides from placating the grammarphiles of the world, is the fact that many international languages rely much more heavily on gender-related syntax.

"We've gotten feedback from translators and users in other countries that translations wind up being too confusing when people have not specified a sex on their profiles," according to Gleit's post. "People who haven't selected what sex they are frequently get defaulted to the wrong sex entirely in Mini-Feed stories."

The complication, however, may arise from transgendered members of the site who don't identify with traditional gender assignments. That's why, it appears, they will be able to manually opt out of the "himself/herself" classification. It'll take an extra step in the process, but it will still be possible.

"We've received pushback in the past from groups that find the male-female distinction too limiting," Gleit's post explained. "We have a lot of respect for these communities, which is why it will still be possible to remove gender entirely from your account."

Google announced on Friday the release of a number of updates to its Blogger publishing platform--well, sort of. The updates have gone into Blogger in Draft, the service's beta platform, with the expectation that they'll eventually become full features.

The updates will seem a bit humdrum for people who don't use Blogger, but for those who do, it's a set of important baby steps toward shaping the service to fit customer feedback. That's especially important for Google, as this is one niche of the Web where Mountain View doesn't have a huge lead: there is tough competition in the blog-publishing market, especially from the likes of WordPress and Six Apart.

Blogger users who want to be on the cutting edge will now be able to set their default "dashboard" to Blogger in Draft, and have the Blogger in Draft blog bookmarked as an easy reference. There's tighter integration of Google Gadgets, as well as a number of minor fixes to a recently redesigned dashboard.

But the "by popular demand" features are likely to gather more interest: five-star rating options on posts, much like those of Pownce; a revised post editor interface; support for Google Account logins and OpenID in comments; and perhaps most importantly, the ability to back up blog posts on a computer or export them to another blog.
